Solid State Transformer (SST)
SSTs, also known as smart transformers, are modern devices that provide bidirectional power flow. In addition to reactive power compensation and harmonics reduction, it combines high-power semiconductor components, control circuitry, and conventional high-frequency transformers. Power grids, traction locomotives, electric power industries, and other applications require solid state transformers. There are many applications where solid state transformers can be used, including converting voltage and switching from AC to DC. Solid-state transformers are used mostly for alternative power generation.
It is also possible to have DC output of required magnitude with a solid state transformer, unlike a traditional transformer. Power electronics-based converters convert incoming voltage into high-frequency AC and then feed it to the primary side of a solid state transformer. In high-frequency transformers, the secondary side is reversed to produce AC or DC outputs for the load, or a combination of both kinds. Due to the frequency at which power is transferred, the weight as well as the size of a transformer is reduced as a result of the power transfer at a high frequency.
Solid state transformers have many advantages that come as a result of their reduced size, which makes them more efficient. There are a lot of things to take into consideration when it comes to planting transformers today. As part of the budget, there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration, such as transportation, site preparation, installation, and transmission. A smaller, cheaper solid state transformer on the other hand could be planted relatively easily in a small solar field or in a storage pod for energy storage. With solid state devices switching faster than traditional electronic components, a utility would have an easier time dealing with a multiplicity of power sources feeding into the grid since there would be more transformers controlling and fine-tuning the power quality as a result of the faster switching speeds.
Demand for electricity grows faster than renewables
Global electricity demand is rebounding rapidly this year, but renewables aren’t keeping pace, leading to an increase in coal power, which could lead to record levels of carbon dioxide emissions next year, according to an International Energy Agency report.
The global electricity demand is expected to grow by 4% in 2022 and 5% in 2021, following a drop of about 1% in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic. India and China are expected to drive the majority of the increase in electricity demand.
Hydropower, wind, and solar PV are on track to generate 8% of worldwide electricity in 2021 with 6% in 2022 based on current policy settings. The global electricity demand will rise by about half over those two years, even with this strong growth,
According to the research of research layer, The global Solid State Transformers Market By 2028, this sector is predicted to generate 178.23 USD Million in revenue and grow 16.6% CAGR.
Basically, a smart transformer combines semiconductor parts with a high-transformer and a control circuit. By managing voltage fluctuations, it improves the quality of power.
