The horns on these big trucks will get you out of their way.
Games where you can drive a truck are more likely to be passed over in favor of games where you can drive a car or something else that looks better. There are some exceptions, but there isn’t enough love for trucks these days, and games with trucks should be recognized for what they can do.
Some of them you can control, some of them are important to the story, and some of them are just there because they look cool or you can do something fun with them. It’s all about how they changed games in general, and it’s a celebration of all trucks, big and small.
Nico’s Van – Devil May Cry 5
Even though it’s a van, it feels like a truck. Devil May Cry is a rock band. Nico’s van jumps from a skyscraper straight down into hell to help Nero and the others fight off demons that came from the giant Qliphoth tree that fell in the middle of the city. This is an impossible feat of physics.
Also, Nero, Dante, and the rest of the demon-fighting crew can use the van as a mobile base of operations to improve their weapons, special moves, and health after a fight for their lives.
Warthog – Halo Series
If you played Halo when you were younger or even now, you’ve probably driven a Warthog at some point. This armored truck can go anywhere and can take a few hits from ballistic weapons, which you’ll need if you want to go exploring behind enemy lines.
This Hog is so big that it deserves its nickname, “Big Hog.” It’s also hard to drive, almost to the point where it’s hard to control until you get used to it. Soon, you’ll be able to use the emergency brake to drift with the best of them in no time, but it’s not a good idea.
Clusters Of Trucks – Clustertruck
These diesel trucks don’t try to get your attention with bright colors or horns that play the same notes over and over again. No, they are a group of trucks that seem to be going to a place that looks like heaven, or at least what a truck would think of as heaven.
They aren’t trying to knock you off either, but that doesn’t mean they’ll slow down so you can jump on their backs. You never learn where they are going or even if they have a place to go. They almost act like they have a single mind, joining up and breaking up on command.
Road Hog XL – Rocket League
In Rocket League, not just anyone can tame this hog. It can be hard to steer if you aren’t used to how the weight changes with speed, but once you learn how to time the brakes, it can turn and drift like any other car. This truck can do a lot more than that.
The hitbox is the best thing the Road Hog has going for it. Most players will go for the fast and sleek Dominus or Octane, but this boxy beauty has a bigger hitbox than the sports car bodies. The better you make contact with the ball and score goals, the bigger the hitbox. A simple trade.
Sweet Tooth – Twisted Metal Series
If you just said “Twisted Metal,” it’s likely that the first vehicle that would come to mind would be the “ice cream truck of nightmares” or maybe its giant mech form. If you try to order ice cream from here, you’ll get more than you expected. Instead, you’ll find a clown with a bunch of weapons and the desire to use them on you as soon as he gets the chance.
As was already said, it has homing missiles and napalm cones, but the napalm cones are the most dangerous. Are they a joke about using an ice cream truck in the deadly competition, or is it just a funny coincidence? No one knows for sure, and the driver couldn’t care less what you think.
Surfboard Trucks – Mario Kart Series
When they were first added in Mario Kart 8, these trucks let players cover a lot of ground on certain tracks and maybe even avoid those annoying blue shells that can ruin a good race. This is a much better way to use trucks than making them into things you have to try to get around.
Ramp trucks in the game don’t just look like surfboards; they also have the standard truck look with the (in)famous Wario logo on the front. If you’re not careful when you run into one of these, it will knock you out of the race for a few seconds, just like bananas do. No pun meant, of course.
Mako – Mass Effect Series
It’s hard to think of a time in the future when trucks like the ones we have now would be used to travel to planets far away from Earth. So it makes sense that the trucks in Mass Effect would be built differently and be able to handle the harsh conditions of space travel. With the lack of gravity and oxygen, a normal Ford would not be enough.
The Mako was made for the Normandy and comes with a quality guarantee. Until you get behind the wheel. The vehicle handles like you’re driving on ice, but it can take a lot of damage, giving you time to try to get away from the thresher maw or finish it off with the cannons.
Shinra Truck – Final Fantasy 7
Most of the time, trucks and Final Fantasy don’t go together. But what about trucks? Of course, FF7 is the first and, at the time, the only game in the series that takes place in a world that is similar enough to ours that cars and trucks are common. Even though fans of Happy Wheels game know all of this, the highway scene at the end of Midgar is still a memorable part of the game.
There is a chase scene where you have to try not to fall off your bike while protecting your friends from Shinra forces. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, the scene ends with a close call on an unfinished highway and a fight with a mecha tank. A famous one.
