Phulara Ridge  – a thrilling ridge walk in to the wild

Wasting that day with negative thoughts is not recommended at all. India has so many graceful, heart touching, various landscapes.  It is impossible for a person to cover all the places of India in his one lifetime. Daily some new places are discovered by the tourists. For ridge trekking Phulara Ridge trek is one of the easy and adventurous treks in Uttarakhand, one can choose for a week holiday. The new trekkers as well as the experienced trekkers can enjoy Phulara Ridge trek.  Steal some time for yourself from  your busy schedule, drop into Sankri village, the base camp of the trek route and enjoy the tranquil ambience.

Important facts

Sankri village is a small village but a paradise for trekkers. It is the base camp of many treks like Kedarnath, Bali pass trek, Kayara trek etc. At a distance of 4 kilometers, Juda Ka Talab lake is a nice place to visit while staying at Sankri village. It is a  beautiful lake at the height of 2700 meters from sea level. Someshwar Mahadev Temple is another main attraction of trekkers on the way to Kedarnath trek. 

It is 25 Kms. trek from Sankri to Phulara Ridge which will take 3 days to reach. You can see lovely meadows on one side of the ridge and mountain views with a beautiful valley on the other side. You can find a trail for trekking in the middle of  two valleys. You feel like you are walking through the edges of a knife. Fully snow covered mountain over an angle of 250 degrees will mesmerize you. Sometimes you can feel like not returning to your own place but to stay forever between the mountains. Viewing Dev Kayara peak and other mountain ranges make this place a pleasant landscape.  

To reach Phulara ridge you need to walk through the dense forest. These forests are made up of trees like Oak, Dwarf, Rhododendron, maple, pine and silver birch. The local habitats avoid this trail. This  landscape has a green carpet meadow with colorful flowers and tiny plants raising their heads here and there. The sunlight tries to enter the deep forest from different angles to make this place more stunning. 

 Chirping birds request the travelers to listen to them only, and the long trees whisper among them to say thank you for not making the place dirty and noisy. The most colorful bird Himalayan Monal is a big attraction of the Phulara Ridge.  There are two best times for comfortable trekkers. One is from March to Middle of June and the other one is from September to November. The temperature varies from 18- 15 degrees in day time and drops till -5 degrees at night. 

Day wise small itinerary 

 Day 1

The nearest airport and railway station is Dehradun. On the first day 8-10 hrs.  drive will take you to the base camp at Sankri village.On the way to Sankri passes through Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Naugaon, Purola, Mori and Naitwar. The Swargarohini peak is clearly visible from Sankari.

Day2 

The 2nd day’s destination will be Sikolta. The walkway will be crossing a beautiful pine forest and the ascending trail will take you near a bridge  within one and half hours. Carefully you have to cross the bridge and you have to climb the trail to reach Jainot Thatch. After 10 minutes of walking you will reach Dhaunda, from where the first glimpse of Phulara Ridge is viewed. By next 3 hrs. You will reach Sikolta. It is an open meadow patch.

Day 3

Destination will be Bhoj Gadi. The walkway will pass through the dark and dense forest and will take an hour to reach Karasu Thatch. Speciality of this place is the color contrast of green plants and yellow flowers. At a distance The Kedarkantha peak will give a picturesque view. The tree lines will decrease in the next trail but Bhoj trees and Rhododendron plants will be noticed all the way.  The view of Dhunda top will  alert you that Bhoj Gadi is just 15 minutes away. The beauty of Kedarkantha, Swargarohini and some other peaks are increasing the beauty of the camp site.

 Day 4

You will start with a beautiful sunrise.  2 and half hours trek will take you to the Phulara Ridge. Standing on a 12127 ft. altitude you will be able to view Hanuman top, Sarutal top, DKD, Kalanag, Kedarkantha, Bandarpoonch, Hata peak, Lekha top, Vijay top, Swargarohini, Rangnala and Devkyara valley.  The camp site will be at Pushtara.

Day 5

From Pushtara, Sankri is 3 hrs walk via Taluka. Meadows, forests and grasslands will remain as before in the returning route.

Day 6

Dehradun is 8-10 hrs. Drive from Sankri. Early start will make your journey smooth.

 Conclusion

Phulara Ridge is a beautiful place in Uttarakhand which is well known for its flora and fauna. The Himalayan Peaks,  Meadows, and trails through dense forest make this trek more interesting. You must visit Phulara Ridge.
