Open-world games are a fantastic genre to immerse yourself in, but not every game is a gorgeous experience; others are terrible and grim, as these amazing examples demonstrate.
Not only do open-world games have the potential to provide players with hours of content, but they may also foster a sense of adventure and pique a player’s curiosity as they explore the game’s universe. There are open-world games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, that, despite whatever horrible and occasionally disturbing things happen in-game, maintain rather light-hearted and give the idea that the characters still have a spark of optimism.
Other games, on the other hand, do the reverse, making it difficult for the game’s characters and even the player to believe that things would improve. The greatest thing to hope for in these open-world games is that things don’t become worse. These are the best dark-themed open-world games.
Far Cry Series
The terrain in the Far Cry series is breathtakingly gorgeous and is based on various real-world locations. The beauty found in each of the game’s locations contrasts with the awful events that occur. The Far Cry games demonstrate that horrible things may happen to anyone, from a Doomsday cult that has taken over a small county in Montana to a brutal ruler of a Caribbean island nation.
Those who do not support the regime or the values of the game’s main antagonist are prime targets for them. Property being taken or destroyed, kidnapping or brainwashing, and even murder and torture are all things to expect from the primary antagonists of the various games.
State Of Decay Series
State of Decay is a survival horror game series that blends several components to create a fun zombie game. It’s not just about fighting zombies; players must think tactically in order to keep themselves and their gang of survivors alive in a world that’s bent on murdering them. Recruiting survivors is probably the most important component of the game. Some survivors are pre-defined and linked to plot tasks, while others are produced at random, including their skills, attributes, attitude, and inventory. Players must discover and recruit survivors with skills that will benefit them and their community, as well as gain their trust.
When survivors are befriended, they become playable characters, providing players with a range of skills and attributes to use for various purposes. A player can build the ideal home base and level up their survivors, but maintaining a home base is difficult because the environment in State of Decay continues to run even when the player is not around. Failure to stay on top of things may result in the loss of survivors, either through their departure or death. And once a survivor is gone, he or she is gone forever.
The Forest
At its core, The Forest is a survival horror open-world game. The game’s plot follows Eric LeBlanc as he survives a plane crash and attempts to find and rescue his son, who has been kidnapped by a mystery man in red. Players must survive in the remote land by scavenging, building, and hunting in any way they can think of.
The player quickly realizes they are not alone, since the forested peninsula is also home to a band of cannibalistic mutants. The mutants aren’t even the most dangerous menace to the player, as more sinister creatures lurk beneath the forest’s surface.
Dying Light Series
The Dying Light series is a fantastic open-world survival horror game. In the first Backrooms game, players enter the quarantined city of Harran in order to track down a renegade political figure and recover an essential file that he stole. An inexplicable epidemic raging through an entire city is a reality that many individuals in 2020 found all too real. In the second game, a new strain of the virus emerges that spreads quicker and farther than the previous one. Instead of being confined to a single city, it spreads throughout the world, effectively wiping out the bulk of the world’s inhabitants and reducing humanity to scattered settlements administered by whatever factions have strength and influence.
Being secluded and without outside contact is terrible enough, but adding a virus that turns humans into vicious zombie-like animals makes the situation even worse. The only thing that can temporarily cure someone of the virus is a medicine called Antizin, which is available in extremely limited quantities. The infected are frightening enough during the day, but things grow considerably worse when the sun goes down and the particular diseased known as Volatiles emerge at night.
Don’t Starve Together
Don’t Starve, Don’t Starve Together is a multiplayer dark fantasy survival game that is a sequel to the dark fantasy survival game. Its main game mode involves a group of people collaborating to survive the seasons in the bleak realm known as The Constant. The worlds of Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together are fraught with peril.
Whether the threat is posed by the myriad hostile creatures that inhabit the world, several of which are huge spiders, or by their inability to meet their own needs, such as hunger. What makes this scenario even more horrifying is that a player can be killed by the real darkness of the universe. Things are extremely hazardous at night, as players must discover a light source and remain within its safe glow or risk being entirely overpowered and swallowed by the darkness.
